Unexpectedly: Chapter 8

Miles Edgeworth, a man missing from known society for almost eight years, ducked under the bright yellow police tape as he made his way to his first case.

This was his new life, and he would do what was right.

The first thing he noticed was the familiar tangy, metallic smell that hit his nose. Miles rounded the corner to see the source.

Blood. A lot of it. There was a large amount of it on the floor just in front of the door to what he assumed to be the kitchen. The door was covered as well.

The blood was smeared on either side of the puddle. He could make out what could almost be called claw marks in the red, accompanied by finger and handprints.

There was no outline for the body. Whoever was lying here didn’t die.

“Good,” He said to himself, breathing out. “A survivor.”

The small restaurant was crawling with police, but one in particular was missing.

“Where is he?” Miles mumbled to himself as he looked around. He couldn’t start his investigation without him.

He pulled out his cell phone and decided to give his partner a call.

IGIARI!! OBJECTION!! IGIARI!! OBJECTION!! IGIARI!! OBJECTION!! IGIARI!! OBJECTION!!

“Um… Miss?”

Trucy looked up from her lap and rubbed her watery eyes. “Y-Yes?”

“Are you here for Mr. Justice?” Asked the nurse in a thick southern accent.

She jumped up, yelling. “Yes, I’m his sister! I-Is he ok!? What happened!?”

The nurse, whose name read Veronica, put a hand on her arm. “Please, calm down, Miss.”

Trucy took a deep breath and closed her eyes. When she opened them again, she asked, “Is my brother ok?”

Veronica nodded a little. “He just came out of surgery… he’s alive and stable, for the moment, but not out of the woods yet.”

She felt her knees give way as relief washed over her, and she dropped back into the chair.

“Thank goodness…” She whispered, her voice shaking. Trucy then turned to the nurse. “C-can I see him?”

“He’s still asleep, but you can sit in his room for a while, if you’d like.”

“I would like that. Very much.”

IGIARI!! OBJECTION!! IGIARI!! OBJECTION!! IGIARI!! OBJECTION!! IGIARI!! OBJECTION!!

In all his years of breaking into the hearts of liars, Phoenix had never seen four psych-locks break simultaneously.

Until today.

Julia sobbed loudly as Apollo’s name echoed in that little room.

Phoenix couldn’t focus on her right now. His whole mind and heart was in shock.

Apollo, his Apollo, had been shot. Twice.

The silence was deafening. Only thoughts of their injured friend were in their heads.

A phone rang. It was Phoenix’s. It took him a moment to answer it.

“Hello?” He choked out.

“Daddy?” It was Trucy.

“Hi, sweetie.” He sighed. Ema and Gumshoe stiffened.

“Daddy…” She sobbed into the phone. “Polly…he…”

Phoenix put a hand over his eyes. His daughter knew. “I know… Ema told me.”

“He’s ok, Daddy. He’s ok.”

His eyes widened and he dropped his hand. “What?”

Trucy laughed through her tears. “I’m sitting next to him right now. He hasn’t woken up yet… but I know he’s ok.”

Phoenix felt tears sting his eyes. He stood up with a small smile and a sigh of relief. “He’s ok. He’s made it.” He announced to the room.

He saw three pairs of shoulders drop.

“Thank God…” Julia whispered.

“Daddy,” She said to get his attention, “Come and see him. I’ll be waiting for you to get here.”

“I’ll be there soon, Trucy. Watch him for me till I get there.” He said, and then hung up.

He turned to Julia. “One more thing before I leave.”

“Y-Yes, Mr. Wright?” She stammered.

“Do you believe you are innocent?”

“Yes, I do.”

“And…” Phoenix paused. “Apollo is your friend, right?”

“Yes.” Came her response.

He smiled. “Then I guess I have no choice but to defend you, for his sake.”

The blonde’s expression brightened. “Thank you, Mr. Wright! Thank you so much!”

“You’re welcome.”

And with that, he pocketed his phone and left for the hospital.

Ema turned to Julia, saying “You’re in good hands. He’ll take care of you.”

She nodded with a small smile as a guard came and took her back to her cell.

IGIARI!! OBJECTION!! IGIARI!! OBJECTION!! IGIARI!! OBJECTION!! IGIARI!! OBJECTION!!

Gumshoe had followed Ema back outside when his phone rang. He looked at the name.

“Uh, oh…” He croaked, turning white.

“Who is it?” She asked.

The scruffy detective flipped the phone open and pressed it to his ear.

“Hello?” He greeted hesitantly.

“Dick, where are you? You were supposed to be here when I arrived.” Snapped a stern voice.

“I-I’m sorry, sir! Something came up, and-“

A sigh interrupted his babbling. “It’s alright. Just get here as soon as possible.”

“Y-yes, sir!” He said, “I’ll go there right away!”

“They sounded kind of mad.” commented Ema when Gumshoe put his phone away. They started to walk.

Dick sighed as the turned the corner. The restaurant came into sight.

Cops were all over the place, and yellow police tape wrapped around almost the entire building.

The showed their badges and ducked under the tape.

“Ah, there you are.” The same stern voice said, a little relief evident in the baritone. A man in a burgundy suit and sophisticated cravat walked up to them.

“Oh! Mr. Edgeworth!” Ema bounded up to him and shook his hand enthusiastically. “It’s so good to see you again!”

Miles Edgeworth gave a small smile and returned the gesture. “It’s nice to see you as well, Miss Skye.”

“You can just call me Ema. Anyway,” she turned to the door of the kitchen, “we’ve got to start working on the scene. C’mon, Scruffy. I’ve got to teach you how to use the luminal!”
